President Carter broke diplo matic relations with Iran Monday, gave Iranian diplomats until midnight Tuesday to leave the U S. and cut off virtually all remaining trade between the two nations. The president threaten ed further action unless there is “prompt release of the hostages.” Carter said the government has shown “excep tional patience and restraint" in trying to resolve the stalemate. Iran has trouble from another front as it put its army on full alert Monday after Iraqi forces backed by helicopter gunships attacked an Iranian border port and nearby oil facilities. Iran also ordered its diplomats in Baghdad to return home. Asheville School defeated the Tryon baseball team 8 to 7 Monday at Asheville School. The Cuban government said Monday that the Cubans who crowded inside the Peruvian embassy in Havana seeking asylum are “vagrants and bums”, but it said it would permit them to leave if Peru is Continued On Back Page Sr. League Baseball Tryout Saturday Polk County is in the process of organizing four teams of Senior League Baseball. The age qualifications are for the player to be 13 by August 1 but not to be 16 before August 1. The territory boundaries for this league will be the same as those for Little League; therefore, Landrum residents will be eligible. Tryouts will be held at Harmon Field on Saturday. April 12, at 10:00 A.M. and on Sunday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m. If possible, birth certificates should be brought on these days. A total of 60 players will be needed for the four teams. New uniforms have been ordered and the application for insurance has been filed. These teams will be chartered, making it possible to participate in the Senior League All Star games wherever they are played. All four teams will play each Saturday until school is out, after that time, an effort will be made to schedule games twice a week. C. 28782 Voter Registration In Gowensville The Greenville County Regi stration Board will be at the Gowensville Community Build ing Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. International Day Thurs. AtP.C. There are 27 AFS students and their hosts from Cincinnati staying in Polk County this week. Fifteen will attend Tryon High School and twelve will attend Polk Central High School. Tuesday and this Friday the students will go to their respective schools. Today (Wed.) they will take a trip to Biltmore House and Gardens. Thursday will be International Day at Polk Central and 100 students from Tryon High School will join the Polk Central students at 10 a.m. in assembly. At 1 p.m the Tryon girls will play the Polk Central girls in a Powder Puff football game. Saturday the group will go to Pisgah National Forest and on Sunday they will leave at 7 a.m. for the return trip to Cincinnati. POLK SCHOOL BD. MEETS MONDAY The Polk County School Board will hold its regular meeting Monday at 8 p.m. in the office of Supt. David A. Cromer. There will be a called Executive Board meeting tonight at 7:30 in the Supt.’s office. The purpose of this meeting will be to interview applicants for the Community School Director. Mr. and Mrs. C. D Rogers and granddaughter, Jennifer Law son, have returned to Kingsport, Tenn., after visiting with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robbie Scruggs of Gillette Woods. TRYON BOOSTERS MEET THURSDAY The Tryon Boosters Club will meet Thursday at 7:30p.m. at the high school. FREE HEARING TESTS Tuesday, April 15, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Meeting Place, in Tryon, hearing tests will be given FREE. The tests are sponsored by the Polk County Extension Homemakers Council — Hearing Aid Bank. Richard Saul, audiologist, will be in charge of testing. Mr. Saul received a B.A. degree from Florida Atlantic University and an M.A in audiology from the University of Florida. He holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech and Hearing Association. The American Association of Retired Persons and the National Retired Teachers Association of Polk County join the Extension Homemakers Council in asking you to come to me Meeting Place Tuesday and have YOUR hearing checked.
